Film Composer: Alexandre Desplat

Alexandre Desplat won the 2015 Oscar Award for best Original Score on the movie The Grand Budapest Hotel. He is from Paris, France. In his early childhood, he started playing the piano, trumpet, and flute. He is a performer and composer. Since the 80’s, his dream of becoming a film composer became reality.

He had worked in many different films. He had made musical contributions for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), The King’s Speech (2010), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows –Part 1 & 2 (2010-11), Argo (2012), Godzilla (2014) between others. Now, he is ready to work on the score of Star Wars: Rogue One (Episode VIII) (2017). The production of this movie is going to change the franchise, so it’s a real challenge for Alexandre to meet the expectations. He has to analyze the previous episodes in comparison with the actual deal.

Desplat’s motivation to continue growing his career is the love and passion he has for what he does. “Writing music is a solitary job” as he add in an interview with Ricky Camilleri. The film is the object that drives him into the writing process. Composing an original score has an equation. He needs to add what the story is giving to him and what he can give to the story. He needs to be entirely connected with the film and its production and cast. After he familiarized with them during the film, he can concentrate in creating different speeds to the film depending on the deadline. The music has to bring the speed of the brain and thoughts of the characters.

Seeing people like Desplat makes us understand that when we love something and we know that’s what we want to do for a living, we need to make a move. We can’t allow our dreams and expertise go away with the time. We need to start working on it now.
