The making of “Let It Go”

Let It Go” was one of the soundtracks of the 2014 Disney animation feature film “Frozen.” Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez are the songwriters of this song. This couple won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award for it. In the last decade, there was no one who won the four awards at the same time.  This song was a production of an extensive analysis of the main character, Elsa. They wanted to represent her transformation; everything she had to omit during her childhood because of the power she had.  This is a very important piece for the movie because there is no dialogue where we can know the real feelings of the character.  They knew that they were supposed to show the step to change. Therefore, it must start with the shy and oppress Else, and end up with her freedom/transformation. The melody itself has to make the connection with the audience. In that way, people who are shy will have the feeling of overcoming this.

Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez didn’t want to compose the traditional Disney princess song.  They wanted to do something completely different. Kristen was dedicated to write all feminist lines, and Bobby wrote all the lines that sound like a drag queen.  Kristen said once: "I think with 'Let It Go,' Bobby and I had feelings we needed to express. Because I imagine, who doesn't have some fear or shame in their life?” When you have to musicalize the lyrics, there is something that comes completely from you not from the character. The spirit of this couple made them go to the top. There are two versions of this song. The first one is the single version that was sung by Demi Lovato. The second version is the original movie track sung by Idina Menzel, who is the voice of Elsa in the movie.
